Hopper's portraits of American life and solitude have made him one of the most instantly recognizable figures in 20th-century art. The Museum of Fine Arts exhibit spans Hopper's most prolific years from around 1925 until mid-century, including 50 oil paintings, 30 watercolors, and 12 prints. ''Nighthawks,'' ''Chop Suey,'' and ''Lighthouse and Buildings, Portland Head, Cape Elizabeth, Maine'' are among the works featured.
