James Levine missed the full Beethoven cycle he had planned for the fall but he is scheduled to lead the BSO in four of the symphonies this week: Nos 6 and 7 on Thursday, and Nos. 3 and 4 on Friday and Saturday. - Jeremy Eichler, Globe Staff
On both sides of Beethoven's Fifth, are the third, fourth, sixth, and seventh at this three-day program by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Tonight is a lyrical evening of Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral," and Symphony No. 7. On Feb. 19 and 20 are the majestic Symphony No. 3, "Eroica," and the composer's high-spirited Symphony No. 4. "Eroica" was composed in 1803, inspired by Napoleon's rise to power. The piece was originally called "Bonaparte," but legend has it that the composer retitled it when he learned that Napoleon declared himself emperor. Maestro James Levine presides at the podium. There will be a 30-minute pre-concert talk at 6:45 each night. - June Wulff, Globe Staff

Elliott Carter’s remarkable Indian summer lives on. Last night in Symphony Hall, soloist Elizabeth Rowe and the BSO under James Levine’s baton delivered a triumphant first American performance of Carter’s Flute Concerto, completed in early 2008, when the composer was 99 years old. (Full review)

James Levine seems fond of starting the Boston Symphony Orchestra subscription season on a note both sober and monumental; that is, with a large choral masterwork - or two. Last year the first subscription program after opening night was Brahms’s “German Requiem.’’ This year, on Saturday evening, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus once again filed onto the risers in Symphony Hall. The program was given over to Stravinsky’s “Symphony of Psalms’’ and Mozart’s Requiem.
