Lin-Manuel Miranda's first memory is of New York's Washington Heights, the neighborhood that inspired his Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical, "In the Heights". He's walking with his adopted grandmother to the local bodega, where the plantains are plentiful, slot machines bckon from the back room, and - most important - merengue blares joyfully. Miranda's childhood and the varied musical genres that accompanied it provide the source material for his Broadway hit, in town for a limited engagement. - Milva DiDomizio, Globe Staff

disappointing
I wanted to like this show. The singing, sets and choreography were good, but the plot (what little there was of it) was lacking and contrived. Not one of the songs were memorable and the character development was absent. It was a shame because the diverse cast of talented actors and singers just couldn't make a mediocre show work. I am baffled by the praise this show has gotten. I am not a tough critic and went in wanting to like it, but came away quite disappointed. It takes more than a diverse cast, some engaging salsa music. You need plot, dramatic moments and tension, development of characters.

Forget the arctic winds wailing outside: How hot does the Boston Opera House get by the end of “In the Heights’’? This critic saw several WASPy Back Bay doyennes packing the aisles as the salsa band grooved under the curtain calls, and I swear their hips were moving. (Full review)
Lin-Manuel Miranda doesn’t have to look far to see the signposts of his youth. The songwriter and actor has spent a majority of his three decades living within a 10 block-radius of the quiet cafe in which he’s ensconced on this winter morning.
