Forty years and counting - Boston Ballet's annual production of "The Nutcracker" never seems to get old. This beloved harbinger of the holiday season combines first-rate dancing with live music and lavish design. Bring on the magic. Karen Campbell, Globe Correspondent

We're intrigued by the newly restored orchestra pit at the Boston Opera House. What exactly is a restored pit? Check it out when you visit with Clara and her friends at Boston Ballet's "The Nutcracker," which dances above the aforementioned orchestra pit for a month. The 40-year-plus tradition features more than 250 kids from the Boston Ballet School who will help tell the E.T.A. Hoffmann-based story about Clara's adventures with her Nutcracker. On the top floor of the Boston Ballet School, three students show off their one-handed cartwheels in a sun-filled studio. The girls are electric with energy from an afternoon of dance rehearsals and excitement over Boston Ballet’s upcoming production of “The Nutcracker,’’ which runs Friday through Dec. 27 at the Boston Opera House. Delia, Fiona, and Bronwyn Wada-Gill are not only all in the same “Nutcracker’’ cast; they are sisters. They spoke with us recently about the production.

Hundreds of dance companies big and small across the country offer adaptations of “The Nutcracker,’’ E.T.A. Hoffmann’s tale of a young girl named Clara and a nutcracker who turns into a prince and leads her on a magical journey to the Kingdom of Sweets. Boston Ballet has carved its own niche with an extravagant production featuring lavish sets and costumes, live music, striking choreography (mostly by Mikko Nissinen), and generally first-rate dancing.
