Director Liesl Tommy and a committed cast do full justice to Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer-winning drama about Congolese women who become casualties of war and male brutality. -- Don Aucoin, Globe Staff
Mama Nadi survives the Congo civil war by not taking sides. Beer and girls flow at her bar and brothel to any man who leaves his gun at the door. Courage, humor, and hope abound in Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer-winning "Ruined" presented by Huntington Theatre Company. -- June Wulff, Globe Staff

This seemingly ordinary tableau of innocence has an aching poignancy in Lynn Nottage’s “Ruined.’’ If the women are hanging on every swoony word, it’s because the love story contrasts so starkly with the brutal reality of their lives, past and present.
(Full review)Nelson Mandela was a prisoner, not a president, when Liesl Tommy and her family emigrated from South Africa to the United States in the mid-1980s. Riots against apartheid were raging in Cape Town, their hometown, and the white government had declared a state of emergency. Yet many people here were unaware of the turmoil, let alone of the laws that constrained nonwhites like the Tommys to a separate and not at all equal existence in South Africa.
