In the expletive-hurling opening of “reasons to be pretty,’’ a ferocious Steph (Angie Jepson) finally gets her boyfriend Greg (Andy Macdonald) to admit to the insulting word he used to describe her looks: “regular.’’

Greg described his girlfriend Steph’s face to a co-worker as just “regular.’’ Now she’s heard about his awkward choice of words, and it tears their four-year relationship apart. It’s a typically scorching scene for LaBute, whose plays explore the more brutal aspects of human relationships, especially between men and women.
