Hookman
Saturday, Apr 14, 2012 8:00p
At first, you might think that 26-year-old playwright Lauren Yee has merely whipped together a clever genre pastiche, fusing the skewed illogic of slasher flicks with elements of coming-of-age comedy and "Groundhog Day"-style alternate reality. But bit by unsettling bit, "Hookman" moves into deeper territory, enhanced by Erin Eva Butcher's performance as a college student trying to reconstruct the events of one pivotal night.--Don Aucoin, Globe Staff

In the first scene of Lauren Yee’s “Hookman,’’ a college freshman named Lexi, home in California for Thanksgiving break, is at the wheel of a car, with Jess, a friend from high school, in the passenger seat. They’re headed to a movie.
(Full review)Horror is usually teenage-boy turf, but playwright Lauren Yee puts young women in the spotlight in “Hookman.’’ The hope is that her blood-soaked comedy-drama will also be a small step toward closing theater’s gender gap.
