Eco Buzz (Stewardship)
Weeks 1-3
June 25-June 29, July 2-July 6, July 9- July 13
Jackie Chan is teaching people about clean water resources, Colin Firth wore a suit made of bamboo on the red carpet, and One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush is keeping her Twitter following updated on environmental justice issues. These celebrities are just a few who care for the environment through their life and business choices. During these three weeks, we will delve into the practices of environmental leaders both famous and not, both local and global. We will study the urban environment to discover what is happening in our own neighborhoods and we will design and work on our own eco project. Join us as we make recycled wallets, learn to knit with upcycled yarn, build a bike powered blender and much more.
Weird Science (Science Investigation)
Weeks 4-6
July 16- July 20, July 23- July 27, July 30- August 3
Did you know that sound travels 4 times faster in water than in air? Did you know oak trees produce over 2,000 acorns a year, but each acorn only has a 1 in 10,000 chance of becoming an oak tree? Did you know that patterns and shapes found in nature have been used by ancient builders, mathematicians and inventors? These questions deal with everyday phenomena that we often take for granted, but each can be explained by Weird Science! Discover the answers to everyday mysteries and many other of life's most interesting questions through scientific inquiry.
Top Chef (Gardening)
Weeks 7-9
August 6-August 10, August 13-August 17, August 20-August 24
The garden offers a variety of fresh food, which can be made even tastier with some simple kitchen tricks. Think carrots, salad greens, peas, radishes...the flavor possibilities are endless when you're using fresh herbs like basil, oregano, and chives. Through food challenges and experiments, you will learn about the plant world and hidden dynamics in garden life. Field trips will include neighborhood farms, farm stands and orchards. In between challenges and harvesting, we will map and design future gardens, water and weed, and even create art projects with items found in garden.
BNC Survivor (Outdoor Skills)
Week 10
August 27-August 31
With all of our modern conveniences, we sometimes forget that for most of human history, people have lived outdoors. Have you made shelters from sticks and leaves? Do you know common plants that you can eat? Have you ever had to work with other people to get things done, win challenges, or set up tents? Can you be creative and resourceful? Well, come see if you have what it takes to survive in the wild. Build on success and learn from failure while constructing creative solutions to several challenges. You'll have exciting outdoor adventures while learning how to use appropriate tools and materials. Join us as we create, design, take apart and build on our ideas.
