THE FACE is a multidisciplinary chamber opera (featuring music, film and choreography), which was conceived and created by Los Angeles-based composer Donald Crockett, on the faculty at USC Thornton School of Music, and USC poet David St. John. The performance also features conductor Gil Rose of Boston Modern Orchestra Project and the “ambitious and eclectic” (NY Times) Firebird Ensemble, also from Boston.

Set in Venice Beach, The Face is a deeply compelling story about the price of fame, desire and creativity. The central character, a once famous poet named Raphael, struggles with the recent loss of his lover/muse, while juggling the demands of a movie being made about his life and his increasing notoriety. The narrative is both passionate and raw in its candor, offering an insightful view of the human condition as experienced by an artist/poet.

The international cast features British tenor Daniel Norman, American baritone Thomas Meglioranza, American mezzo-soprano Janna Baty and Australian soprano Jane Sheldon. The Face also includes an artistic team from the French theatre production company Heliotrope including Paul Desveaux (Concept/Set Design), Yano Iatrides (Stage Director and Choreographer), Laurent Schneegans (Lighting Designer), Anton Nadler (Filmmaker, from Starling Entertainment) and Amaya Lainez (Assistant Director). This team has recently completed several highly acclaimed European productions including an opera based on string theory with Ensemble Intercontemporain and an extended run of "Les Enfants Terribles" by Philip Glass (adapted from the work of Jean Cocteau).
