The BLO season has begun with a new production of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly," directed by Lillian Groag and conducted by Andrew Bisantz. Yunah Lee is making her company debut as Cio-Cio San, heading a cast that also includes Dinyar Vania (Pinkerton), Kelley O'Connor (Suzuki), and Weston Hurt (Sharpless). - Jeremy Eichler, Globe Staff

The interesting thing about Giacomo Puccini's “Madama Butterfly,” with which Boston Lyric Opera opened its season on Friday, is how both the title character and the piece itself generate their stature out of sheer zeal.
