The Tony Award-winning musical - eight statues in all - brings its distinctive brand of adolescent angst to Boston for a month-long run. -- Louise Kennedy, Globe Staff
Spring Awakening
SPRING AWAKENING takes its inspiration from one of literature’s most controversial masterpieces – a work so daring in its depiction of teenage self-discovery, it was banned from the stage and not performed in its complete form in English for nearly 100 years....

I've been waiting for this show to tour ever since it closed, regrettably, on Broadway. With that said, last Sunday in the Colonial Theater (my "first time" and certainly not my last) I came with an open mind and some idea of what the show was about. By the end of the first act, I was blown away, left wondering about the fates of the characters I'd grown to care about over a mere hour, and awakened out of the theater slumber I've been in for the past couple years. I am so happy that I had the chance to see this show before I left Boston for the summer. The show is cleverly written, brilliantly staged/lighted, and is propelled forward by a truly beautiful soundtrack and talented cast. The cast takes you on a journey of self-enlightenment that doesn't just end as soon as the show is over. The haunting and moving messages follow you as you leave the theater. I'd recommend this show to everyone.

I was awakened for the second time the other night and sat on stage next to Melchior, who was superb (despite being so "cute" as the Globe critic somehow found a problem) as were all the cast. I also sat on stage in NYC last fall and this was equally wondrous. By the way, I'm mature enough to be the grandfather of most of the cast.

You won't want it to end. HINT TO PRODUCER: I wish they had an encore song. But maybe it's a good thing to leave you wanting more, and you WILL want to see it again and again. I can't wait for the movie and hope they cast some qualified performers such as are in this touring cast, rather than "movie people" who can simply carry a tune. Does Mamma Mia or Phantom of the Opera ring any bells?
This touring cast is Tony Award/Academy Award calliber. Remember their names and faces, you will be seeing a lot of them.

Composer Duncan Sheik has described "Spring Awakening," the Tony-winning musical he wrote with Steven Sater, as "a rock concert where a play breaks out." (Full review)
Rape, suicide , masturbation, homosexuality: No wonder "Spring Awakening" created such controversy when playwright Frank Wedekind tried to mount it in the 1890s. But the current Zeitgeist Stage Company production at the Boston Center for the Arts revels in its fascinating teen characters, maintaining an elegant balance between the shock factor inherent in the issues they confront and the simple tale Wedekind is telling.
