Haley House Bakery Cafe

The greater Haley House community (see www.haleyhouse.org - soup kitchen, affordable housing, farm, intentional community) is dear to my heart. HH's newest recent social enterprise to create this cafe and accompanying catering business, staffed by neighbors who experience barriers to employment and sourcing most of its produce locally (even from Haley House's own farm), has been tantalizingly successful!
But even aside from the fabulous philosophy behind this place, I'm a ravenous fan of HH's classic lunchtime "Wicked Good Curried Chicken Wrap" (raisins add a kick to chicken doused in rich and spicy curry sauce) and the crisp ginger slaw that comes on the side. With a glass of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, it's hard to find a tastier, and more reasonably priced, lunch. The menu boasts a board selection of foods to appeal to the spectrum of neighbors and the bustling lunch crowd, from jerk chicken and meatloaf to paninis and pesto, and organic drinks and fair trade coffee to accompany it all. Local art is in regular rotation on the walls and a cozy Thursday night event, "Art is Life Itself," brings diners together because of the food, and more.
