on The Pirates of Penzance
Carlisle Savoyards Pirates of Penzance
Being one of the two most popular Gilbert and Sullivan shows, it is frequently performed. For a non-professional production this performance was particularly good with tryly excellent Mabel (she really hits all the high notes) and Frederick. The remainder of the troop is solid with the men's chorus (both Pirates and Policemen) not as good as the women. Major General Stanley has a solid voice and does a great job with the patter songs, though not quite in the traditional manner I saw as a kid with Martyn Greene and those who succeeded him and more or less copied him. Donna DeWitt does an admirable directing job, and there is even a surprise visit from "Queen" Victoria. All in all a very pleasurable evening
