Woodman's

Main St. on the Causeway (Rte. 133), Essex, MA, 01929
(978) 768-6451

With picnic tables and cafeteria-style service, this spot touts itself as the birthplace of the fried clam. Today, Woodman's also serves the hard-to-find fried lobster. Vegetarians, beware: Woodman's still uses lard. Patrons have to pick up after themselves; some do that better than others.

(no rating) June 14, 2009 - Boston.com - Tom Long

Fried clam aficionados in New Hampshire no longer have to make a pilgrimage to Essex, Mass., to the birthplace of the salty treat. Woodman's of Essex, the legendary restaurant on the banks of the Essex River, has opened its first satellite spot at the former Greenfields Restaurant in Litchfield. (Full review)

Woodmans great Mels Park BAD

We did not have a problem with Woodman's only the whole nightmare new england at Mels. Woodmans is a great place has great food and good service but My sister wasted $150 to go to Nightmare NE/Spooky World for my birthday. We paid $60 EXTRA dollars for absolutley nothing! They advertised FREE refreshments and there were NONE! They advertised VIP lines that would be quicker to get into the haunts and both general admission and VIP were in 1 line so it took HOURS! The staff had NO communication WHATSOEVER... i had staff telling me that their managers said they would have free hot chocolate for VIPs and to go talk to Joel but of course... he was NO WHERE to be found. Then to really drop the bomb they told all the GENERAL ADMISSION people they could go back any weekend and go through the haunts that they missed but the people who paid $20 extra dollars a ticket COULDN'T.
I will only ever go back to go to woodmans but I do not reccommend Mel's place for anyone unless you enjoy being lied to and getting ripped off!!
