Visitors are welcome to tour the Old Ship Meetinghouse in Hingham. Built by the townspeople in 1681, it is the oldest church building in the country in continuous ecclesiastical use. It was nearly a century old when the American Revolution was fought. The pew is marked where Benjamin Lincoln sat, General Washington’s second-in-command, who received Cornwallis’s sword of surrender after the battle of Yorktown. A visit to the meetinghouse is a step into 300 years of history.
Arrangements can be made by calling the church office (781-749-1679) or through E-mail: oldship@verizon.net
