This mini-camp will take us back in time as we explore how peopled lived and used this land; dress in period costumes, make a pioneer craft, eat old time food, take a tour the bunkers and learn what ! Secret Worlds Grades 1-3 July 10-12 Wet places are wonderful areas to look for wildlife. Investigate the secret world of insects, salamanders and others living in our forests and ponds. Use Magnifying glasses to get a closer look and build a habitat for one of these mystery creatures. High Flyers Grades 2-4 July 17-19 Hummingbirds hum, hawks soar, and dragonflies zip through the summer sky. Animals that fly are fun and exciting to investigate. Learn how to identify local birds and insects while exploring their ecological role and observing their behavior. Experience a bird of prey up-close, dissect an owl pellet and learn amazing facts about beautiful butterflies. Pond On! (entering grades 3-7) July 24-26 Splash into Assabet's wetlands and discover frogs, turtles, fish and other aquatic creatures. Discover the amazing adaptations of aquatic animals and predict the health of the water by water quality testing. Go for a canoe trip around the pond while exploring the corners of the wetlands and try to catch the big one while fishing. Nature Exploration (entering grades 1-2) July 31 - August 2 Lace up your boots and get involved with exploring the refuge's ecosystems and what lives in them. Simple observations and investigations provide a foundation of interest and desire to learn more about nature in years to come. Short hikes, hands-on activities, songs and creative endeavors round out the day. Rock & Roll Grades 1-3 August 7-9 Your rock collection will grow during this camp! You will examine the three types of rocks, examine minerals & fossils, and learn how they form and how to identify them. Make rock music, create rock art and eat an edible glacier. Woodland Wonders Grades 2-4 August 14-16 The forest is a magical place with all the trees, plants, insects, animals and birds. Look all around and you will find animals and trees of all shapes and sizes. From spider webs to bee hives, bird's nests and beaver dams, discover how animals shape their world around nature. Animal Orchestra Age 4- Grade 2 August 21 - 23 Summer is in full bloom in August and so are the critters in the forest. Come see what the chirping, buzzing and splashing is all about. Discover the music of nature as we learn bird songs, insect sounds, frog calls and more. Make a musical instrument of your own and discover that every animal has a place in the choir.
