Originally known as Dive, Brooklyn's DIIV is the beachy pop project of Zachary Cole Smith, also a member of the like-minded Beach Fossils. Taking the project's name from the Nirvana song, Smith started Dive in 2011 as a vehicle for his own songs and began recording on his own while adding guitarist Andrew Bailey, bassist Devin Ruben Perez, and ex-Smith Westerns drummer Colby Hewitt as his live band....

Fueled by Grant’s songwriting and rich baritone vocals, the band released a pair of independent albums in the ‘90s before signing with Bella Union, a British label run by two former members of the Cocteau Twins....
