Exchange Street Bistro

67 Exchange St., Malden, MA, 02148
(781) 322-0071 - Website

Every city needs a stylish place where people can gather, perhaps for a few cocktails without facing a long drive home afterward. For Malden, it’s Exchange Street Bistro — ‘‘a bit of Back Bay that’s only 10 minutes away,’’ according to a sultry voice-over on the website. Malden has enough going for it, including a growing restaurant scene, that it doesn’t have to aspire to be someplace else: The best thing about Exchange Street Bistro is that it’s zero minutes away. The food, however, is a mixed bag. ‘‘The Big Chop’’ is 20 ounces of dry pork, and the eggplant napoleon tastes like cafeteria food. But tuna cooked three ways (above) is a dish to order, seafood Newburg has a retro allure, and the cocktails are well made. (Devra First, Globe staff | October 4, 2007)

Food OK, Service Not

Showed up on a slow Tuesday night and felt unwanted. Our appetizers were pretty good. Our entrees not so much. We asked for a steak rare and got a medium steak. When we told the waitress, her response was that the chef usually does get it right, and then she shrugged and walked away. Our check was brought without us asking for it. It was our son's birthday and we were actually going to order dessert. Oh well. We won't be back.

Cruise ship Food

Martinis, you either make a good one or you dont,in this case it had way too much vermouth. My steak that I ordered (med rare) came well done,I was totally bummed out.It was on top of fried shoe string potatos that sucked, obviously pre-cooked and the sirloin came topped w\ two o'rings that oozed with grease. Our waitress was great and tried the ol' would you like a desert routine, I wasnt hungry because of the disgusting ring that I took abite out of, by that time I just wanted to get hammered so we around the corner to "All Seasons Table" where we should have gone in the first place great drinks, great bar!! ask for Ray.

Great food

Seriously great food and a nice atmosphere. I had the haddock with creamy mash potatoes. It was fresh, perfectly cooked, and I would have licked the plate had it been at all socially acceptable. Nice atmosphere for friends, good for a date too. And no fighting for parking!

Pay no attention to the so-called Globe critic

Exchange Street continues to be a first class restaurant with the best martinis around. The critic who not only panned the restaurant but also panned the people of Malden should be ignored (at best). The food is fresh and reasonably priced. It's a nice addition to Malden.

Fantastic!

We planned my sister's surprise birthday party at the Exchange St Bistro and could not have been happier with the results! The food was excellent and the service superb! They have a function room in the back that was perfect for our needs. We ordered mostly appetizers and they were all very tasty -- no leftovers!
