Beloved (Les bien-aimes)

In the '60s, Madeleine leaves Paris to re-join her Czech husband Jaromil in Prague, but his infidelities and the arrival of Russian tanks in the city lead her back to France. Thirty years later we follow the romance of Madeleine's daughter, Vera, who falls in love with a musician in London who is incapable of devoting himself to her. Meanwhile in Paris, a re-married Madeleine has rekindled her love affair with Jaromil.

‘Beloved’: Isn’t it romantic? Yes and no.

With “Beloved,” writer-director Christophe Honoré’s love affair with the French New Wave — and particularly the tart cotton-candy fantasias spun by Jacques Demy in the 1960s — gets stretched to the breaking point. Honoré immediately gets our attention by casting Catherine Deneuve and Chiara Mastroianni as mother and daughter, since we can only assume their real-life intimacy will bleed onto the screen. And it does. But they’re not the only ones bleeding.
