The Way, Way Back

THE WAY, WAY BACK is the funny and poignant coming of age story of 14-year-old Duncan's summer vacation with his mother, Pam, her overbearing boyfriend, Trent, and his daughter, Steph. Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in gregarious Owen, manager of the Water Wizz water park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world - all during a summer he will never forget.

A coming-of-age comedy-drama set on Buzzards Bay, “The Way, Way Back” is a minor pleasure rather than a major work. But minor pleasures have their place, especially in summertime, and this one goes down like a popsicle on a hot day.
The cast is worth a look: Liam James plays a crushingly awkward teenager whose divorced mother (Toni Collette) brings him to the summer cottage of her new boyfriend (Steve Carell); the kid gets lessons in living from Sam Rockwell as the motormouthed slacker king of the local water park (played by Water Wizz in East Wareham).
Writer-directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash keep it moving genially if not always freshly, and Carell’s very good in a change-of-pace role as a jerk.
