Spiga is the kind of restaurant you want to love. The staff makes you feel well cared for. The food is presented nicely, and it can taste as good as it looks. But it can also be oversalted or undersalted, fishy in flavor or funny in texture. (The Boston Globe, Sept. 23)

This place has the potential of being great and at first glance, you think you've come upon a hidden jewel.
After working in the area for a couple months, my fiance and I ventured in after a furious few hours of house hunting. Extremely thirsty and in need of a drink, we chose the bar as we almost always tend to do.
We started out with a delicious glass of pinot grigio, one of the best I've had. Then had an appetizer of Parmesan crusted shrimp over a grain type of rice (forno?) mixed with tomatoes and avocado. This should have been delicious but was clearly missing something, salt at the forefront. Additionally, it was a little bit dry. The shrimp were huge but seemed to be fried w/o the Parmesan crust. Overall, this was disappointing.
For our dinner, my fiance's carbonara was delicious. Big, tender fettuccine noodles which seemed to be homemade in a perfect smokey cream sauce w. the right amount of pancetta and peas. Fortunately, it was so good and large enough that I was able to share it but my eggplant left much to be desired.
My eggplant was layered about 5 cutlets tall with fresh cheese in the middle, advertised with a Parmesan crisp. This crisp turned out to be an over sized tortilla chip with flavor. I've had Parmesan crusts that are delicious, typically served with ceaser salad. This was nothing of the sorts. Added with a bland, runny eggplant stack with a mild, unexciting marina made for much disappointment. Thankfully they had fresh bread and roasted garlic, served to every table because this saved me.
Overall, if you need to check this place out try it for lunch and save some money, dinner was quite pricey and left much to be desired.

Behind the chain stores of Highland Avenue in Needham, on a little turnoff easily missed, is a rip in the space-time continuum. (Full review)
