Blue Ribbon Bar-B-Q

1375 Washington St., Newton, MA, 02465

These siblings are little more than take-out shops, save for a handful of stools for lucky customers, but the quality of the slow-cooked, wood-smoked barbecue is high. Vinegary pulled pork, smoky beef brisket, chunky garlic mashed potatoes, peppery kale soup, creamy sweet potato pie -- it's all here, and it's all good. Service isn't fancy (think paper and plastic) and the food is messy, but the mood is boisterous, lively, and delightfully down-home.

That smell — it’s strangely familiar. It’s been a long time, but it’s unmistakable. It’s smoke in the air, the char of grilling meat, the scent of summer. (Full review)

BBQ Knowledge.

I was raised and worked around BBQ, BR's is almost there it needs a hint of hillbilly cooking, maybe some hanging smoked & BBQ hams, smoked hole chickens, mutton and some burgoo, then it with be a prize winning pit.

Better than Redbones.

For years I was hoping that we could find BBQ as good as the food I would get when in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. Red Bones was really good and king of the hill, until Blue Ribbon opened up. Nobody beats these ribs and pulled pork. The open brisket sandwich is like a mini-Thanksgiving feast. The only menu item that gets topped is the chicken. Firefly's gets the nod on the Jerked Chicken.
