Dire Straits

Their origins may have been the downmarket British pub-rock scene of the mid-70s, but Dire Straits' enormous success in the 80s rewrote the rules on superstar promotion by using innovations like CD and MTV, as if 'they had been designed with them in mind' as one critic put it. Guitarist and songwriter Mark Knopfler had paid his dues in a Leeds pub band before moving south to London.
