To the Ends of the Earth, Painting the Polar Landscape features over 40 paintings, sketches and photographs by artists who journeyed to the Arctic and Antarctic, including noted painters Frederic Edwin Church, Rockwell Kent and Lawren Harris. Showcasing work by American, British, Canadian and Scandinavian artists from the 18th to mid-20th centuries, the exhibition presents the range of artistic response to this unique landscape—from the documentary to the sublime and existential. Common in all works is the assumption that the distant polar regions were beyond the influence of humankind, an idea that has been tragically eclipsed by recent environmental developments.
