Power Electronics (CEMMI)

Description:
Power Electronics will teach you how to, well, power things! Batteries are extremely handy ways to store energy, but don't always come at the right voltages -- it can be hard to find the 5 volt, 12 volt, or 17.34 volt battery that your project so desperately needs. This class will focus on how to take standard power sources (such as wall power or battery power) and convert them to a useful voltage for your projects!

Session 4: Power Generation (Solar and Electromechanical Power)
Class Goals:
In this class, students will learn how to:
convert back and forth from DC to AC voltages and currents
determine the efficiency of your conversion circuits
power (almost) anything from a battery!
Prerequisites:
A basic familiarity with electronics theory: current, voltage, resistance, ac vs. dc voltage/current, etc.
Materials:
$50 worth of electronics components will be available for purchase from the instructor.
Instructor Biography:
Nathan Lachenmyer: Previously a quantum physicist, these days Nathan Lachenmyer is a graduate student in Electrical Engineering at MIT, with experience in power electronics, artificial intelligence, rapid prototyping, and most recently bioelectronics.
