Sanbonmatsu says you should support the Kendall Square cinema because it's dedicated to the art of cinema, but Sanbonmatsu doesn't understand that the Kendall is exactly why the Somerville Theatre can't play art films - because the Kendall (and it's corporate owners) BLOCK the Somerville Theatre from playing those films along with it. Somerville went from playing 2nd run films that nobody went to to playing whatever first run films it can get that will draw a crowd.. and it still plays midnight films, classic films, and double features once in a while.

I disagree wholeheartedly with the previous reviewer. While Somerville Theater now shows new releases, I think that is a plus to it and not something to be looked down upon. It still will host a variety of Indy films and festivals (along with some great concerts and other events) which is great to go along with the newer movies. The tickets are cheaper than all the big name theaters, the popcorn is delicious and freshly made and the serve beer and wine! What else do you need?

The Somerville Theater has sold its soul to the devil of the commodity. It used to be that one could find independent films at this and other local theaters like the Capitol in Arlington. Tragically, the same Hollywood crap is now being programmed in Somerville as at the local Fresh Pond Mall. Each year, international filmmakers produce tens of thousands of new films on a variety of topics. But instead of being exposed to this diversity, we are surrounded by mindless drivel like "The Hangover Part II" and "Thor in 3D." What a shame that the owners of Somerville Theater have decided to sell out art, truth, and our community to the lowest common denominator. Give your business to the Kendall Sq., Brattle, and Coolidge Corner Cinemas instead--excellent theaters that have remained committed to cinematic art. Also check out the under-appreciated Harvard Film Archive.
