I have been here with my friends, family, and boyfriend many times. This evening we went there expecting the usual delicious burger and onion rings, however our experience at table lucky number 13 was not at all what we had planned.
After waiting 30 minutes for a table, and 45 minutes for THREE burgers- my mother got her burger and after having asked for a burger that was medium- she got a well done, burnt burger.
Upon telling the waitress that this burger was not "medium" her response to my mother was "well, i put it in for medium so i don't know what happened." My mother said, i will eat it because i do not want to wait another 45 minutes for a burger, but i just thought i should tell you. To this, the waitress begrudgingly said with an attitude "i'll see what i can do."
She then walks over to the corner and starts talking to the owner, whispering!
She doesn't come back for 30 minutes, if not more- clearly avoiding us but waiting on all the tables around us. Finally, when she comes back she picks up all of our plates and proceeds to walk off. My mother had to ask her whether she was able to do anything about that or not and the waitress only replied, "sorry all i can do is get a 3.50 beer off the bill for you."
We went up to the owner and spoke to him about it and he was extremely rude, and the waitress was ridiculously defensive, even though we were actually not upset with her at all.
The owner responds, "did you eat the burger?" and we said "no, only some of it." he was like- "then you ate it, so you pay for it." When we told him we do not think this is acceptable, he said, "OK then, i will take the burger out of the waitresses paycheck!" right in front of her!
Bottom line- good food- awful service. The owner did not even have the guts to come over and talk to us, and the waitress was defensive from the beginning for no reason at all.
This man does not care about his employees, or his customers, and is not someone i care to do business with ever again. They apparently already got their "good press" and no longer need to worry about good customer service.
I would not recommend going back here if you want to have a pleasant experience.
Get to R.F. O'Sulilvans early on any night because the wait for a table can be quite long. Went as a group of 4, around 30 minute wait at 6. Very little room to stand around the bar because the place is packed.
The burgers though are well worth the wait. Tried the "black and blue" with pepper and seasoning rimming the outside of the burger and blue cheese crumbles. Absolutely delicious. Can get all burgers with either fries, onion rings, or pay extra for 1/2 of each. The onion rings were so crispy.
The table next to us ordered buffalow strips as an appetizer and the smell of the sauce was so strong, they offered us to try one and I must say they were great! Beers are priced under average as well.
I've been going to R. F. O'Sullivan's for better than five years now and couldn't believe it when I saw no one had written a review.
As the Globe review states, it can be cramped, noisy and you may have to wait for a seat . . . but the burgers! The burger's are without a doubt (with a nod Mr. Bartley's) the best in Boston. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the accompanying fries or onion rings are a perfect match.
It's a friendly neighborhood place with a good selections of beers, a solid menu of items other than burgers (but did I mention the burgers?) and a welcoming staff.
As a matter of fact, as I'm writing this, I'm planning a visit tomorrow. O'Sullivan's is highly recommended; you won't be disappointed.
