The Boston area isn’t generally thought of as a health food mecca. Prime rib, fried seafood, boiled dinner: These dishes represent our conservative culinary roots. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that the vegetarian, vegan, and raw restaurants that thrive in other cities have cropped up at a slower pace here.

When their food arrives, diners here sit and stare at their plates, which are colorful, architectural, and beautiful. Nirvana delight ($13), grilled tofu marinated in tandoori spices, comes as two thick triangles leaning on a pedestal of quinoa salad with lush spinach, beet relish, and a cucumber-yogurt sauce. The aromatic, tender bean curd and its crisp edges are slightly spicy, and the grain salad is flecked with the tiniest pieces of bell and hot peppers, yellow squash, and zucchini. Spinach seems to have been cooked just until the leaves sigh on the plate.

terrible service ... never seated ... "no reservations" for small parties but two couples managed them anyway + were seated ahead of 16 outraged would-be diners!!

Oh gosh as a longtime vegan was I dying to try this place after reading the Globe review! Unfortunately I cannot review the food, only the service. These people were totally unprepared for a busy Saturday night!!

My friend and I got there this past Saturday night at 7 pm and were told there'd be a 30 - 40 minute wait. [I had checked their Web site about reservations and, I quote from it, "Please note: reservations are limited to parties of 6 or more."] Ahead of us in line was another party of 2, and a party of 3. Two more parties of 2 came in right after us, then more and more people crowded the small lobby. The hostess took some names but seemed to spend a *lot* of time in the kitchen.

After 10 minutes, the first party of 2 ahead of us was seated. A half hour later two people who had come in AFTER about 8 of us was seated (by the manager, not the hostess, who was still MIA) at the counter. This provoked much outrage and this couple was actually confronted by a long-waiting customer ... they said they had called ahead and made reservations (see above). WHAT??

About 10 minutes later (50 in total by now) we were still waiting ... a 4-top was empty and 8 people had just left one table, which was now being set up for a large party. ANOTHER COUPLE who had come in much later than a dozen of us was seated before both us and the party of 3 ahead of us (who were still waiting) ... guess what?? THEY had made a reservation too, said the hostess. "I thought you don't take reservations for less than 6 people?" I asked. "We don't, technically," she mumbled. Perhaps the owner/manager had taken these reservations, as he was escorting them to their seats, who knows. But not a WORD of apology from him or the hostess to the many outraged people in the lobby. My friend and I were told we'd be seated at the counter next, as soon as the people there finished with their dinner (they'd just been served!!). At this point my friend and I left and had a very nice meal at the Delux Town Diner across the street, as did several other would-be Red Lentil patrons.

This place was totally unprepared for a busy night. Avoid this place on Saturday night at all costs unless you call and make reservations even though they're not accepted, "technically!" Plus the rug in the lobby was filthy, as were the windows. I do feel bad for the hostess, probably overworked and very underpaid, but also very, very ineffective.

Excellent Veggie Fare!

Red Lentil is fantastic! Flavors are wonderful - food is creative and fresh. This is a great addition to the Watertown dining scene. The Eggplant Caponata is really excellent as well as the Sweet Potato Quesadilla.
